Remove metadata from a photo

A photo often says more than you think: where it was taken, when and with which camera. See it here and remove it before you share the photo.

How it works

How to clean a photo

  1. Choose your photos

Drag them into the box, pick them on your device or paste one with Ctrl+V. iPhone photos (HEIC) work too.

  2. See what is inside

For each photo you see the location, the camera, the date and other hidden data. A location stands out straight away.

  3. Remove and download

We remove everything without saving the photo again, wherever possible. Then we read the new photo back, so you know for sure nothing is left.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is metadata in a photo?

Extra data your device stores with the photo: the make and type of camera, the date and time, the settings and often the place where you stood, to within a few metres. Anyone who gets the photo can read all of it.

Does my photo lose quality?

Not for JPG, PNG and WebP: we leave out the hidden blocks and do not touch the pixels. For HEIC, AVIF and GIF that is not possible; we save those again as JPG or PNG in high quality, and we tell you so.

Why is the colour profile kept?

The colour profile says how the colours are meant to look and reveals nothing about you. Without it a photo can look duller. If you still want it gone, untick “Keep colour profile”.
